Statewide Obesity Plan

Prevention Connections has convened a group of obesity and health experts across the state to participate in a statewide effort to reduce and prevent obesity in Virginia. The plan will serve as a toolkit for all Virginians, including businesses, organizations, and faith communities to assist in efforts to reduce and prevent obesity with a focus on greater reductions among populations experiencing disparities. Stay tuned for the launch of our plan in 2019.

Fitness Park Community Build

Prevention Connections formed a partnership with Project Fit AmericaBallad Health SystemsLowes of Wise and Norton Elementary and Middle School to assist in a community wide initiative to reduce childhood obesity rates within the city of Norton through the establishment of a fitness park and assistance of donated goods for the utilization of a greenhouse on school grounds. The park is being built this summer, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for fall 2018.

2018 Reduce Tobacco Use Conference

On April 8-11, 2018, Prevention Connections and the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth and Prevention Connections co-hosted the 13th National Reduce Tobacco Use Conference at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott in Norfolk, Virginia. The conference showcased the latest in tobacco-use prevention, reduction and cessation with teens and young adults.

2017 Weight of the State Conference

Prevention Connections and the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth co-hosted Virginia’s fifth Weight of the State conference on childhood obesity prevention on April 3-4, 2017, in Richmond, Va., at the Hilton Richmond Hotel in Short Pump.

Virginia’s 2017 Weight of the State conference highlighted Virginia’s efforts to bridge the nutritional divide, showcasing the latest approaches to increasing access to healthy foods, ending childhood hunger and creating healthier communities. National, state and local experts shared cutting-edge tactics for promoting healthy nutrition and closing the hunger gap, including community-based approaches and policy changes.
